Challenges to getting your email delivered
You may spend endless hours and countless dollars crafting the perfect email message to send out on your next campaign. You consult your muse to get the just right headline so that people will open the email message to read what you have inside. All of that effort, time, and money is wasted, however, if your email never even gets delivered.
Here are a few reasons why your email may not be getting delivered:
- ISP restrictions
- SMTP blocking
- Blacklisting
Internet Service providers are in the business of providing Internet access to thousands, even millions of customers. They are not interested in sending bulk email for your business, so they place sending restrictions on the number of emails you can send at a time. The larger the ISP, typically the more restrictive it is.
Bypassing your ISP's SMTP server by setting up your own is a good idea, but can be a challenge if you don't know what you are doing. You must ensure that your server has all the proper mail exchanges, a record, and pointer record settings properly configured in your DNS zone files. This is what allows your mail server to tie in with your domain name. Recipient mail servers monitor these files to try to identify you. If something fails your email messages could be blocked or slowed.
Sending emails from a dirty list where you fail to remove bounced email addresses -- or honor unsubscribe requests -- may get you blacklisted on one or more black hole databases. Once you get on a black hole list, it is difficult and time consuming to get removed from them. It's best to avoid them altogether.
