Step
4 - Response Handling
Configure Bounce, Subscribe,
Unsubscribe and Click-Thru Options
Before you begin. You should have a subscribe,
unsubscribe and a bounce account setup specifically
for Campaign Enterprise to access. Note: You should
not use personal accounts to handle the unsubscribe/bounce/subscribe
features.
Unsubscribe
Specify the properties of the Unsubscribe processing. Note:
This is an email-based unsubscribe feature.
To use a web-based unsubscribe feature please
see the sidebar to the right.
Web-Based
Unsubscribe
To use a web-based unsubscribe you can
commandeer one of the Clickthru links (see
below). Here is how to set it up:
- Go to CLICKTHRU1
- Enter the Unsubscribe
URL; this can be some sort of web-based
confirmation page stating something like "Your
request to Unsubscribe has been successfully
recorded."
- Enter the link text
for the Unsubscribe link.
- Specify the Database
field you want to use for unsubscribe tracking. Note:
If you want to track web-based unsubscribes
separately you will need to have a separate
database field.
- When a web-based
Unsubscribe is recorded, the specified
field will be incremented.
- You can query your
database to easily identify the updated
fields.
|
- Enable Unsubscribe Processing: Check the
box to activate this feature.
- Email Address: Enter the unsubscribe account
created for Campaign. When Campaign finds an email
in this account, it reads the mail, increments
the field you specified for unsubscribes and removes
that email.
- Hyperlink text: This is the text you
want displayed at the point where you place the
{UNSBSCRIBEHYPERLINK} merge field in the html message.
- Pop Server: The mail host.
- Username and Password: You must include
these in order for Campaign to read the information
on the email account.
- Enable Check box: When unsubscribe email
is returned, increment the specified database field.
Subscribe Processing
- Enable Subscribe Processing: Check the
box to activate this feature.
- Email Address: Enter the subscribe account
created for Campaign. When Campaign finds an email
in this account, it reads the mail, increments
the field you specified for subscribes and removes
that email.
- Hyperlink text: This is the text you want
displayed at the point where you place the {SUBSCRIBEHYPERLINK}
merge field in the html message.
- Pop Server: The mail host.
- Username and Password: You must include
these in order for Campaign to read the information
on the email account.
- Enable Check box: When subscribe email
is returned, increment the specified database field.
Bounced email Processing
This option will identify and increment fields
in your database that have bounced. Again, you should
have an account specifically created for bounces.
Bounce
Handling
In order for the bounce
handling feature to work properly you will
need to create a separate bounce account
for each database to which you will be connecting.
If you have two separate campaigns, with two
distinct databases, listening to the same account,
you will not get accurate bounce reporting. The
first campaign may remove any bounced emails
it does not recognize from the POP account, even
though they may be valid for the second campaign.
By having a separate bounce account for each
database you can eliminate this potential problem.
If you no longer wish to access the bounce account
for a particular campaign, make sure you disable
the checkbox for the specified campaign. (See
above). If you are sending several campaigns
using the same database, all bounces will be
recorded back to the database regardless of which
campaign the email originated.
When you save a campaign with Bounce Processing
enabled, Campaign Checks to see if any other
projects are using the same account. A notice
appears listing all the current campaigns using
a particular account.
Bounced emails can easily be identified and cleaned
up or filtered out for subsequent campaigns.
(You can set up a bounce account for each campaign
if you wish to track that information).
|

- Enable Bounce Processing: Check the box
to activate this feature.
- POP Account: Enter the bounce email account
you created for your selected database.
- Username and Password: You must include
these in order for Campaign to read the information
on the email account.
Bad Format Handling
Some email adresses in your database are of incorrect
format and can never be delivered. Campaign will
identify these emails and not send them at all, sparing
the SMTP from processing these emails.
- Enable Check box: When a bad email format
is identified it will increment the specified database
field. To record these emails have a column in
your database named "format" of type
int and default 0. Campaign will write to the database
when these addresses are identified. Later, you
can go back to that database and remove all emails
where the format column has a value of 1 or greater.
Hyperlink click-thru Tracking
Here you will specify the properties of the click-thru,
the destination and the display text.
Clickable
Image
To create a clickable image enter the URL for
the webpage in the destination URL field. In
the Display text field enter the image tag:
<img src="http://www.domain.com/image/image.jpg" border="0"> Note:
The image must be clicked on for the link to be tracked.
Tracking Image
To track image impressions you will
need to implement some sort of tracking script
where your images are stored. This will not
necessarily tell you who viewed your image,
but you can tell how many views you received
per campaign. Used in conjunction with click-thru
hyperlinks and clickable images, you can
get a good statistical representation of
the readers' behavior.
