Spammers Caught In the Act:
Email Marketing Researchers Secretly Audit 1,057
Prominent Online Organizations And Catch Three
Sending Spam
TUCSON, Ariz. (July 7, 2004) - Ever wonder if
subscribing to email newsletters results in your
email address being sold to spammers? In a secret
audit of 1,057 prominent online organizations,
including many Fortune 500 companies, permission
email marketing software developer Arial Software
(www.ArialSoftware.com) sought to answer that
question.
The results of the study, entitled, "2004
Email Subscription Spam Risk Audit," have
been published by the firm and are available now
at http://www.ArialSoftware.com
The results are surprising: 99.6% of the organizations
protected email privacy and didn't share email
addresses with third parties. "This indicates
that subscribing to email newsletters is exceedingly
safe," explains Mike Adams, architect of
the study and president/CEO of Arial Software.
"The research indicates there is very little
spam risk associated with subscribing to online
email newsletters."
Interestingly, nearly all the spam received by
researchers came from sites offering freebies,
prizes or other marketing gimmicks in exchange
for an email address. There was no spam received
from online retailers. There were other problems
found by the study, however: 1.8% of organizations
ignored unsubscribe requests. Another 51% didn't
offer any type of unsubscribe link (a violation
of the federal CAN-SPAM Act) and 36% didn't bother
to send emails at all. "We were surprised
to find that nearly four out of ten online organizations
don't bother to send emails to their own permission
email lists," explains Adams.
The full study, including a list of all 1,057
organizations audited, is available for downloading
